Reviews for the Shipowner: Sail in Greek Waters (6)

Nice weather, the boat not so much.
Cleaning of the boat was not done sufficient. Very dirty, both in- and outside. But the worst thing was the sails. At check out we didn't pull the sails out due to strong winds. After departure we pulled the sails out and noticed that there was a rip in the genua. Also the main sail didn't fully roll out, due to a rip in that also. It got stuck at the upper spreader. Since this was on Saturday (weekend) I didn't report it to the Charter Company. I reported it on Tuesday. When we got back to the base both the boat owner and base manager, Jovana, was very unpleasant. Neither of them were sorry for us but both were very sure that we need to pay for the sails (repairs). That because I reported it too late. In the end I paid for the repairs, even if the damaged was already there when we got the boat. At least we had nice weather, and a nice crew.

The Charter Company responded to this review 08.10.2024

Our point of view is assumed in the response of the client. The damage on the sails were indeed reported on the fourth day of their cruise (Tuesday, while the charter commenced on Saturday). We had informed the charterer that since we could not open the sails in the port (due to the strong winds), they should report any issues as soon as they opened the sails. It is inaccurate that they did not contacted us on Saturday, because it was weekend, since we are available for support any day and time. During check-out, when we asked the charterer why he informed us with delay, they claimed to us that they did not open the mainsail because of strong wind, they only opened the genoa. Obviously, there is a discrepancy regarding their claims in their review below.

Regarding the cleanness of the yacht, the charterer did not report anything during check-in, neither during check-out of the yacht. We take the matter of cleanness seriously and we give a lot of effort to deliver the yacht clean and tidy to our clients. In case there are details that our personnel missed and they are noticed by the check-in team or the charterers, the staff immediately returns to the yacht to finalize cleaning. 2 weeks after the charter, how can we accept comments about the cleaning? Nevertheless, we will communicate the charterer’s comments with our team, as we always wish to improve the state of our yachts and our services.

Regarding the comment that our Team was unpleasant. We cannot accept this either. We maintain our professionalism during check-in and out, offering advice about the yacht and the destinations. During check-out, there is definitely stress to complete the checks within the tight timeline (as there are less than 3 hours available, from return of the yachts to the dusk, for checking the yachts).

We informed the charterer that he had ripped the sails and then he started arguing with us, claiming that this was the condition that yachts were delivered to them. I think it was then that we were assumed to be unpleasant. I must clarify that it is impossible to deliver damaged sails to our charterers, for the following reasons:

Yachts are investigated upon their return to the port. Checking the sails is one of the most important tasks of the check-out. The specific yacht had returned from previous charter exactly a day before the new charter (under discussion) started.
In case we identify a damage on any sail, we must immediately repair it, or it could damage the conditions of the whole new charter. We are sailors, we know that people charter the yachts in order to enjoy sailing, so a damaged sail could ruin the whole next charter. It is impossible to accept it.
Even if we assume that we ignored (e.g. we didn’t see) a damage in one of the sails, how could we have missed to ignore damages in both sails? This is not possible; we run a base of 5 yachts in Lavrion, if we missed o obvious damages, we would never have made it to October. I am afraid that the damages on sails took place during the specific charter, despite the opposite arguments of our client.
I am sorry about the negative feelings after their holidays, but since they caused those damages, they had to pay for their repair.

I remain at your disposal for any further information.

Charter company "Sail in Greek Waters" - stay away !!!
The trigger was a contractually regulated no-go restriction from 6 Beaufort, which meant I was (contractually regulated and obliged) unable to return the (not strong-wind-equipped) charter boat on time to the charter base in the port of Lavrion. Already when taking over the very deficient boat, I was received in an extremely unfriendly manner by the owner of the charter company, who is also the owner of the boat. The somewhat "rough" tone between the charter company SAIL IN GREEK WATERS and me began as early as the second day (of three weeks in total), when I was confronted with several technical problems at the same time. Problems that were impossible for me to detect in the departure port, tied to a mooring line, in the evening darkness. Keywords: windlass, weak power supply, inadequate wiring, faulty fuse, oxidised windlass remote control, unsecured anchor chain, etc. After contacting them, I was told on the phone that I probably had no experience handling a sailing boat. "The engine absolutely has to run for at least 4 hours every day, otherwise there is not enough power on board" (despite the fridge being switched off and despite 2 solar panels) ??? I remained friendly and managed to contact an electrician, whose completion I then had to wait for in the port of Serifos for 3 days… Ok. Done. Continued sailing positively and cheerfully. Thanks to MEDICANE APOLLO, the weather became increasingly unpredictable. In Folegandros I contacted the charter company SAIL IN GREEK WATERS in writing on 21.10. with a request to hand the boat over on time on 29.10. further south than the starting point Lavrion, at their drop-off point Paros. I had also offered to bear any additional costs. This was rejected in writing, for whatever reason. Although this charter company permanently offers charters to/from Paros on its website. I was told that it was the skipper's responsibility to return the boat to Lavrion on 29.10. without fail. The boat was already not booked after my charter period at that point (and still was not a week later either). Numerous other sailors did this without issue with other charter companies. Skippers were also sent from Athens to collect the boats and bring them back north to Lavrion or Athens later, once the weather had stabilised. So I was forced to continue sailing north for as long as the wind stayed below 6 Beaufort. Until on Sunday, 24.10., due to strong wind from the north in the port of Loutra/Kythnos, only 27 nautical miles from the destination, I was more or less trapped. Checked the weather forecast hourly. 6-7-8 Beaufort with gusts over 40 knots were forecast… and that is how it was for 5 days. We are not even talking about wave height… I tried to find a solution. A way to protect neither myself and my crew nor the boat unnecessarily (and with FULL contractual responsibility) from danger and damage. Several sailing boats took refuge in the small port of Loutra/Kythnos, some with torn sails and even one broken mast was reported. So I did not leave (could not… and did not want to) the safe harbour for almost a week. In Kythnos as well, other charter boats from other charter companies were simply left behind FREE OF CHARGE; the crew reached Lavrion by ferry and the boats were brought back in the following days by local skippers, as sailors told me. My contact with Marenauta, which tried to send an urgent request and appeal for goodwill from SAIL IN GREEK WATERS on my behalf as a customer, also remained unsuccessful. I paid an additional €350 on top of the €3,400 charter fee for a 3-day extension that I needed to return in calm seas. Our return flight tickets expired. Overall, the behaviour of the charter company "SAIL IN GREEK WATERS" and its lack of customer focus cost me more than €1,100 in additional expenses. The base manager of the neighbouring charter company in Lavrion warned me "from sailor to sailor" at checkout to pay close attention. Because, according to statements from several sailors before me, the charter company "Sail in Greek Waters" constantly tries to charge current customers again and again for old damages that had already been claimed and paid several times, in order to keep the deposit… "Marenauta" TOP - charter company "Sail in Greek Waters" FLOP

The Charter Company responded to this review 16.11.2021

We appreciate your review, which we translated by Google, as we do not speak German. We hope we have understood your review efficiently, so we respond to the best of our understanding:

1.Regarding the technical issues in Serifos island, once you reported them, we immediately called the local electrician, who fixed all issues, and you expressed your appreciation for our prompt response. We have kept all the messages, with you and the electrician, confirming that damages were fixed the next day of your report. Hence, you stayed in Serifos for three days because of your decision, not at all of our alleged delay to fix any technical issues.

2.We never claimed that any technical issues were caused due to your lack of experience. But, the guideline of battery constructors is that indeed, the batteries should be charged at minimum 4 hours a day in order to preserve voltage. It is strange that you are surprised by this, since you have informed us that you have your own sailing yacht at home and you also have extensive sailing experience. Please note also that although the yacht is equipped with solar panels, these do not support effectively in cloudy days, like the ones that you were sailing.

3. Regarding your request for yacht re-delivery in Paros island, indeed you suggested the re-delivery the yacht in Paros island, some 65-70 miles away from the agreed re-delivery port of Lavrion. Unfortunately, we could not satisfy your request, because the re-delivery of a yacht requires not only the staff for the transfer, but also an organized base on the island (i.e. on Paros island). As the base on Paros did not operate at the end of the season, we could not offer this service. Please note that we had never promised to deliver to you any services in Paros island, so, I believe that it is not fair to blame us for not being able to satisfy your request.

4. As you correctly describe in your review, nearly one week before the end of your trip you decided to go to Kythnos island; then the winds increased, and you could not safely sail away from that island. However, please note that the forecast, at the day of your trip (Sunday, 24 October), predicted very strong winds for the whole of the following week. Hence, you knew, when you were sailing to Kythnos, that most probably that choice of yours would create problems in the following days. There were alternative options, such as sailing to the Saronic Gulf, where the winds are considerably calmer than the Cyclades islands. There were not many more miles for that destination, nor harder sailing conditions. People who sail regularly in Greece choose to sail toward the Saronic in order to avoid the rough weather conditions in the Cyclades, caused by the strong northern winds. However, you chose to sail to Kythnos island, despite the heavy forecast. As a consequence of your decision, you requested to stay on the yacht in Kythnos island for 3 more days.
Your request has been to stay in our yacht for those 3 days for free. We are sorry, but we cannot offer our yachts for free.
According to the terms of the contract, each day in excess of the initial agreement is charged at 150% of the agreed fee. We charged only 80% of the agreed fee, as a gesture of good will. But we must make clear that for any yacht charter the corresponding fee must be paid. Seriously, have you ever stayed in a hotel without paying for fee?It is hard to understand your request on this matter.

5. Finally, we cannot accept the "hear-say" stories that you allegedly heard in the port from other sailors, about fictional charges made by our company. We are sorry, but it seems that you try to blame us with unsubstantiated arguments, in order to enhance your accusations, due to the charge of 350 EUR, after keeping the yacht for 3 more days. This is quite disappointing for a so-called sailor.

The lesson learnt to us by our experience with you, is that definitely we must inform our clients more persistently of upcoming weather difficulties. Once the weather conditions deteriorate, it becomes really hard to navigate the sailing yachts so the best advice is to avoid the Cyclades islands when strong, north winds prevail. People find it hard to sail under these conditions and then the disappointment comes. I am sorry that this happened in your case but we would expect a more fair response from your end.
