Croatian beaches
Croatian coast is characterised by the stream from south to north carrying clear water from the Mediterranean; another characteristic is the almost total absence of large rivers that, usually, transport sand silt which "builds" beaches, but also inevitably pollutes the coast. You need not to pay the stay in Croatian beaches, and approach to the sea is free in the whole coast.
There are not organised beaches with long rows of deck-chairs and sunshades. You can bring your deck-chair, sunshade and towels and lie wherever you want, without paying the "entrance". In zones where swimmers are numerous, concrete terraces were built to make the access to the sea easier - not at all unpleasant and frequently very well inserted in the environment. The water is not very deep immediately but, usually, it reaches one metre and then gradually the depths increases. There are always parts of the beaches for children, with pebbles and usually in coves. Large sandy beaches are not very common, and the main ones are in Lopar on the island of Rab, Novalja in the island of Pag (and in some bays on the island of Pag), Privlaka and Nin near Zadar. Beaches of small pebbles, almost sand, are in Baška on the island of Krk, Crikvenica, along the whole coast between Omiš and Makarska.

Those who want to have a refreshing and regenerating swim can choose among many places in indented cliffs where the water - immediately deep - has a crystal blue colour, where it is possible to get dry in the warm sun, laying on flat rocks. The best way, in general, to enjoy beaches in Croatia is to avoid choosing the main beaches, closer to settlements and usually very crowded, and to sail a few coves farther away or to the islands to find a solitary place of enchanting beauty with transparent waters. Croatia is still one of the few places in the Mediterranean where you can swim on your own even in August and on board a craft it is possible to discover most solitary and fascinating spots in this share of the Adriatic.
