Naturism in Croatia
"Naturism is a way of living in harmony with nature, characterised by practicing nudity in public, with the purpose of favouring one's own respect, respect for other persons and for the environment"
1974, International Naturist's Federation - 14th World Naturists' Congress.

Croatia was the first European country to popularise the concept of naturism, whilst in other European countries naturism was limited exclusively to members of clubs.
Its first expansion started in the Sixties when the first naturist campsites were opened in Istria and Dalmatia. Today Croatia has a rich supply of services for naturism: beaches, campsites, hotels, apartments and tourist settlements. Naturist beaches in Croatia are called "FKK" abbreviation of the German word "Freikorkultur" (Free Body Culture). Most of the other beaches have areas for "dressed" swimmers and areas for naturists. The area for the naturists is usually on the side of the beach, never very distant and not clearly separated from the rest. Moreover, in numerous coves and small bays, some of them can be reached only by sea, there are people swimming together with naturists and nobody pays any attention to differences. Naturism represents an important share of Croatian tourism and it is deemed that about 15% of the tourist in Croatia are naturists or nudists. That means that almost 1,000,000 naturists visit Croatia every year. Tha should not surprise you, if you consider Croatia's 1,000 islands and its marvellous bays it is not difficult, on board your own craft, to find a quiet place in the Mediterranean macchia, surrounded by pine forest or centuries old olive trees, where you can feel free from any social convention.
