General information about Croatia
Surface: mainland of Croatia covers an area of 56,594 km^2, ant the surface of the water of the territorial sea is 31,067 km^2.
Population: 4,437,460 inhabitants. The majority of the inhabitants is of Croatian nationality; ethnic minorities mainly present are: Serbian, Bosnian, Slovenian, Hungarian, Czech, Italian and Albanian.
Language: Italian, English and German are spoken in all tourist destinations. As far as Italian is concerned, it should not be forgotten that many Istrian towns and villages were Italian a few decades ago.
Constitutional System: Croatia is a multiparty parliamentary republic; the capital is Zagreb, a town of almost one million inhabitants, the economic and cultural centre of the country.
Characteristics of the Croatian coast: the coast, spreading in almost 6,000 kilometres is very indented with numerous bays, beaches and gulfs and is surrounded by 1,185 islands, out of which 47 are inhabited. There are 600 lighthouses, coastal and harbour lights. The Adriatic Sea is, in fact, a wide arm of the Mediterranean Sea, to which it is connected by the Strait of Otranto. The Adriatic spreads for 870 km in the direction South west-north west, and its mean breadth is about 160 km. Along the coast there are more than 350 natural ports and marinas, for sailing and motor crafts. The Mediterranean tidal wave lasts 12 hours, enters the Adriatic through the Strait of Otranto, spreads north and circulates along the eastern and westerns coast. The height of the tidal wave is 25 cm at the Strait of Otranto to 80 cm in the far north.
Climate: the area along the Adriatic coast enjoys Mediterranean climate, with pleasant temperatures and sunny days. The average temperature along the coast is in January 5-9°C, in August 21-27°C. The sea temperature in Winter is 12°C and around 25°C in Summer.
